Matara-Beliatta Railway
On April 8, Minister of Transport & Civil Aviation Arjuna Ranatunga officially opened the 26·8 km Matara-Beliatta first phase of the Southern Railway project.
Phase 1 costs of US$ 278 m were funded by a 20-year loan negotiated in 2012 by China's Export-Import Bank and the ministry. Construction was carried out by means of a design and construction contract, with China National Machinery Import & Export Corp as general contractor and design subcontracted to a consortium of Parsons Brinckerhoff and China Railway Fifth Survey & Design Institute.A groundbreaking ceremony was held in 2013.
The single-track arrangement of 1 676 mm gauge is designed for diesel trains operating at speeds up to 120 km / h. Every journey there are seven passenger trains serving major stations in Kakanadura, Bambarakanda, Wawurukannala and stops in Piladuwa and Weherahena.
